Laughter makes you healthy - so does having fun
October 8, 2008 – 4:01 pmThere is a lot of evidence that laughter is the best medicine. First, when you laugh you create endorphins, which make you feel good, and in fact do relax the body. This helps you feel better, but it also takes the tension out of your body.
Also, it has been found that when sick people are shown comedy films and shows regularly, and laugh a lot they feel better. The fact is that when you feel upset, you create stress inside your body, which can be damaging.
On the other hand, if you keep laughing, as when watching a good show, you cannot also keep the bad thoughts that are getting you down in your mind. The happy thought always overcomes the unhappy one.
Also, you can have only one type of thought in your mind – if you have a happy thought and a sad thought, one will dominate. So if you are sad, try smiling and laughing – and watch a comedy show. Preferably a good one. It really will cheer you up.
What makes you happy? Is it going out with friends, going to a wedding, or watching a good show. Or maybe playing golf, and improving your golf game. Whatever it is, do that more often. I enjoy sailing myself. There is nothing to compare with sailing with the wind on the beam at about 5 knots on a sunny day above an azure sea.
I am not saying that a few funny shows or comedians will overcome a serious bereavement or a serious illness, but they make these things more bearable. Eventually, you might just start smiling a bit more, and laugh with people. Then you are on your way to having fun. At this point I recommend you go to see a stand up comedian in a live show. You will find it is much more fun than watching a similar show on TV.
Some people prefer to read a good book, and others tell jokes. Just do whatever makes you feel happy.
