Wheatgrass - Revealed

October 9, 2008 – 12:07 pm

You have probably overheard people chatting about Wheatgrass at some point over the last few years. Maybe it is in a juice bar or from a friend or member of the family already utilising some of the many various types of wheat grass but if you’re like most people, you may still not understand wheat grass or the natural healing power wheatgrass harnesses.

Wheat grass is basically the blades of grass grown from wheatgrain. When the grain is planted it develops shoots within a few days. A few days later the shoots grow into blades of lush green grass. Within 8-10 days the wheatgrass can be ready for harvesting, At this stage it is worth noting that although the wheat grass already contains high levels of nutrients it hasn’t had the time required to develop complex carbohydrates which are often found in over-wintered wheatgrass.

As soon as the wheatgrass has been processed it is usually processed into many forms, which usually include wheat grass powder (Typically made by drying and grinding the wheatgrass blades into an extremely fine powder) wheatgrass capsules (simply the powder capsulated for ease of consumption) wheatgrass tablets (again typically the powder cold pressed into tablet form) and wheatgrass juice. (The wheat grass leaves are juiced in a specialist wheat grass juicer which crushes the liquid from the wheat grass leaving essential nutrients intact.)

Most forms of wheatgrass are packed with a wealth of health boosting attributes, with a large range of minerals, vitamins, enzymes and amino acids. Wheatgrass also contains an impressive 70% chlorophyll, which is extremely similar to blood due to its DNA structure. This means our bodies can utilise the nutritional content in wheat grass very easily.

Wheatgrass has been used for decades but it has only recently reached the UK and it can now be found online and at many health food shops. It has been used for many medical conditions and can be applied topically for external skin conditions such as eczema and acne. When taken internally it can even help detoxify the blood stream replenishing it with important nutrients which are essential for optimum health.
