Designing Company Logos For Construction Companies
July 2nd, 2009
The construction arena is very competitive indeed. Larger organizations handle the bigger development jobs while smaller and newer companies must demonstrate their quality with numerous subcontracts before moving on to larger projects.
My design company has just been tabled an assignment to produce a new construction logo design for a local construction company. To get things going, the art director and I visited our client’s office for a short meeting to garner more information about the company.
Like many others we have questioned, most companies recognize they need a new identity to remain competitive but are not quite sure what they want. That is where our services can make a positive impact.
Before embarking on the logo design, we ordinarily inquire about the company history, its turnover, its philosophy, its specialty, its target market and why it wants a new construction logo design; just to get a feel of things.
We ascertained that they are a relatively young firm, 9 years in the business with 4 big subcontract projects and many smaller ones under their belts, each one more impressive than the last. They are now preparing to adopt a blue ocean strategy and venture into eco-friendly medium cost suburban development - a niche with few competitors - and therefore taking the opportunity to garner a reputation for themselves as one of the few firms to engage this niche.
From the dialogue, we discovered that they have the required resources to engage medium scale development projects. Their chosen niche also makes it easier to distinguish them from other developers.
At our office, we had a little brainstorming session and and decided on the concept we would finally adopt. Following that we employed the expertise of 4 designers to produce individual interpretations or logo samples to turn those creative concepts to images.
After a number of days, the logo concepts were ready for show. Some designs utilized stylized text while others used construction related graphics like hammers and spades to get the point across. Although all four construction logo design samples were unique in their own way, they all clung to 2 crucial points.
Professionalism
Developers deal with major projects. As a prerequisite to be awarded such projects, they must always be regarded as a professional and responsible corporate citizen with excellent business ethics. Therefore, the tidy and clear designs reflected that adequately.
Eco-Friendliness
This is the niche this organization is determined to penetrate. Naturally, the designs, either by color or graphics, reiterate the company’s dedication to the preservation of the environment.
Now it is up to our clients to select one of the four design concepts. However they can make minor alterations but as professional designers, we must make certain the design in the end keeps to the key points noted earlier.
